New Nintendo 3DS XL review – Is new always better?
$699.95 Original price was: $699.95.$271.97Current price is: $271.97.
The New Nintendo 3DS XL is yet another remake from the Nintendo 3DS that swept the market with its 3D screen and portability. The question still remains, is new always better than the old? With no huge changes on the New Nintendo 3DS one must ask is it worth to get it or should I just stick to the old cheaper model?

The Nintendo 3DS XL hasn’t really changed since it was introduced. With its top screen and foldable design it has kept its portability and easy to grab and go feel.
Probably the biggest change that you will notice first on the new Nintendo 3DS XL is the new thumbstick on the top right side of the handheld console. Not a full-size thumbstick but more of “thumb-mouse” as you could see on the old Lenovo laptops.
Another change you might see is that the game port has moved from the back to the front and the charging port has moved from the side in the back to the middle in the back. You can also see that Nintendo has actually added RZ and LZ buttons on the back too so now you got 4x back buttons on top of the normal two.
Nintendo has also completely changed the old SELECT / HOME / START buttons on the bottom part and now only has the HOME button under the bottom touch screen. SELECT and START buttons have been moved on the side of the screen.
The New Nintendo 3DS XL has the exact same touchscreen at 4.18″, 320×240 resistive touch while the top part has mainly stayed the same with 4.88″, 800×240 resolution, though having a wide view 3D compared to the old 3D screen.
So as anyone can see there hasn’t really been much change display wise with the new and old Nintendo 3DS XL.
A more hidden feature that most people won’t notice instantly is the ability to read Amiibos through the bottom screen. Place an official Nintendo Amiibos on top of the bottom screen and it will be read by the console. A great little feature that brings a lot of joy to those who like to collect Amiibos and get something extra in their games with them. The Amiibo’s are a fun and easy way to make games more fun and give players something to collect as well.

There hasn’t been a huge upgrade on the camera of the New Nintendo 3DS XL except that Nintendo promises that it has a better quality in areas with bad lighting.
The battery on the New Nintendo 3DS XL promises around 3.5 – 7 hours of 3DS games or 7 – 12 hours of DS games.
The old Nintendo 3DS XL promised almost the same amount of time with 3.5 – 6 hours of 3DS gaming or 7 – 10 hours of DS games. So not much has changed here.
The software has stayed the same so if you’re familiar with 3DS you’re familiar with the New Nintendo 3DS XL and if you’ve never had one of these products in your hand the best way to describe the user interface would be that it’s like using a phone. You got your game icons, click them and you’re ready to play, draw or whatever you want to do with your New Nintendo 3DS XL.
Gaming couldn’t be more fun with the New Nintendo 3DS XL. Everything works as expected, there are no lag spikes or jamming thanks to the new upgraded performance and the games themselves are as loveable as ever.
Thanks to its older version you have quite a few great games instantly at hand.
For example:
- Animal Crossing: New Leaf
- Super Mario 3D Land
- Mario Kart 7
- Pokémon Sun and Moon
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (my personal favorite)
- Super Smash Bros
- Luigi’s Mansion 2
So you won’t be out of quality games for a while.

The New Nintendo 3DS is a great upgrade for those who are looking to get a new handheld game console or just looking for an upgrade to their old one. There isn’t much difference to the old Nintendo 3DS XL on screen or even usability but the biggest changes have been made internally with the performance and ability to use amiibos much easier with the integrated amiibo reader under the touch screen.
- More powerful than the old one
- Dual analog controls give more freedom in games
- More features than the old 3DS XL
- 3D effects feel even better
- Battery life hasn't been improved much since the old 3DS XL
- Screen resolution is the same
- Doesn't bring that much new to the table
