Canon Pixma MX492 is an affordable small printer for home or small office. But what does this small and affordable printer truly offer? Is it worth the cost and how much does it cost in the long term in ink cartridges and easy to set up? This is what we are going to try to find out in today’s review.
Always buy from trusted sellers with verified reviews and trusted companies.
Canon Pixma MX492 printer doesn’t bring anything new to the design table in behave of printers. It has a scanner on top of the device, the paper tray above that and the printed paper itself comes from the middle of the printer.
Dimension wise the Canon MX492 measures 7.5 by 17.2 by 11.7 inches (HWD). It weighs around 13 pounds meaning one person can easily lift it on top of a table and it can fit next to a PC easily thanks to its small size.
Compared to a normal printer it’s much smaller as you can see in the picture.
As for the features it can hold up to 100 sheets of letter-size paper, which is a nice thing for a small office. The auto document feeder (ADF) can hold 20 sheets.
Unfortunately, the Canon Pixma MX492 doesn’t have a duplex scan and it can’t print on both sides, which might be a problem for some users. Thankfully though the printer does offer wireless connectivity using Wi-Fi when using the Canon Print app and it does work as a standalone copier and a fax machine. You can also easily scan images to your PC or use the phone app Canon graciously has provided for their users to quickly and easily print images from your phone.
Setting up the device was easy. Grab the instructions, follow them step by step and voila, we were done.
In short grab, the ink cartridges, install them, connect the printer to power, install the software and connect the device to Wi-Fi and we were done. Though we must emphasize for all our readers to read the instructions, for some users have reported troubles installing the device and most of the time it’s just because people are lazy and refuse to read the instruction manual.
As you can expect the MX492 isn’t the fastest printer and it can only produce around 7 pages per minute. For home or a small office, this should be more than enough and considering how much the device cost, this is as much as we expected from it. For anything bigger than home or a small office we recommend checking out the Canon imageCLASS MF247dw printer.
The print quality the Pixmax MX492 can produce is average at best. While the image quality overall could be better, the printer for a cheap, all arounder, does its job adequately. Unfortunately, this means we can’t really recommend this device for anyone thinking of printing photos especially. For photo printing, we recommend reading more about the HP Officejet 4650 printer.
Considering also the fact that the printer gobbles up ink like there is no tomorrow. Its costs can go as high as 0.08 $ per page and it only prints one side, which ups the overall costs because you’re forced to buy more paper. Again something that should be taken consideration on the longterm use.

Canon Pixma MX492 is cheap, average at best all around printer that does its job. Its image quality isn’t the best but for home or a small office, it’s a great pick, especially if space is limited. The downsides are that it only prints onside of the paper and it’s ink costs can stack up quickly. But if you’re looking for something cheap, easy to use for occasional printing needs, then it’s just the right pick for you.
