Amazon Fire HD 8 review

Last updated on 15/03/2024 22:49

Your thinking of buying a new tablet, but don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars and you want it to be tough enough to handle everyday situations. Well, thankfully Amazon has heard our call and has made the Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet. In today’s review, we will be taking a quick look inside this tablet to find out what it’s capable.

Where to buy Amazon Fire HD 8

Always buy from trusted sellers with verified reviews and trusted companies.

2

Design

Amazon has come up with a really sleek and nice feeling tablet. The Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet feels and looks good. The 8-inch tablet isn’t anything special, but its sturdy casing is something you don’t see a lot in the cheaper end of the tablets that are sold these days.

The tablet has two cameras. One the front and one on the back, but by any means, you can’t call them good. At best they are average.

Unlike most tablets, you find the power and volume buttons on top of the device. It seems that Amazon thinks straightforward and as noticed that most people will keep their device sideways when watching movies, tv-shows or other video formats. This takes a bit of time to get used to but in the end, it feels like they’ve made the right choice for this tablet.

Dimensions of the tablet are 8.4″ x 5.0″ x 0.4″ (214 mm x 128 mm x 9.7 mm). Available colors for the Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet are black, blue, red and yellow.

3

Ports

Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet doesn’t come with any special ports. You actually have all the ports on the top right between the power and volume buttons which include the main USB Mini and the 5.1 sound port for your headphones.

4

Camera

This might be the weakest point of the tablet. The cameras aren’t that great, but what can you expect from a ~80$ tablet. The front-facing and the rear-facing camera are both 2MP so there aren’t much to celebrate. Thankfully the cameras are able to record up to 720p HD so most people should manage with them.

5

Speakers

The speakers are Dolby Atmos, dual stereo speakers which are actually quite nice for the size. Again, nothing special or even good, but for a trip or when you just want to watch a video or stream without the hassle of starting a PC.

6

Battery

The battery is promised to hold up to 10 hours by Amazon, but in our test with a full-screen brightness, it lasted around 6-8 hours. This is a considerably good test result, meaning that an average user should get their full 10 hours if they don’t use the tablet at full brightness all the time or play any games that require a huge amount of processing power.

7

Performance

Performance wise the tablet is nothing special. It’s not as powerful as an iPad or a Surface Book, but what it does it does well. The Quad-core 1.3 GHz with 1.5 GB of RAM let it run smoothly. There’s no lag when you watch movies or streams at least when your internet is not lagging. Some more demanding apps like games might feel a bit sluggish, but that is understandable with this price range and considering that this tablet is not made for gaming or anything like that.

8

Storage

You can get the tablet with 16 or 32 GB which isn’t that much in today’s standard, but thankfully you can expand it to up to 400 GB if you need. Amazon also offers unlimited cloud storage for all your Amazon content, so you won’t be running out of room any time soon with those. We do recommend getting an external Micro SD card because if you like watching movies, downloading music and reading e-books you might notice that you’re out of room pretty quickly if you are not using the cloud storage though.

9

Alexa

An Amazon tablet wouldn’t be an Amazon tablet without their own Alexa voice assistant. It works fairly well and does bring some nice features like hands-free communication, ordering stuff from Amazon and other useful features. You can even tell Alexa to show you what’s happening in your home if you have it set it up with your home security camera like the Wyze Cam.

Conclusion

If you want a cheap tablet that does its job and offers you quick access to Amazon services like Amazon Prime, then the Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet is the tablet for you. It’s not the most powerful or the quickest tablet on the market, but what it is, is cheap, affordable and something that will work.
